Why Are Electric Cars Better For The Environment?
They Don't Produce Gas Whilst Running
The main way that electric cars are better for the environment is that they do not produce any gases when they are running. No carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides or particulates go into the air. Particulates and nitrogen oxides are invisible but bad for our health. A diesel or petrol car, whether idling or driving, gives off these gases to be breathed in by the people inside and outside the car. Carbon dioxide adds to the greenhouse effect which is driving climate change.
You could argue that carbon dioxide is produced at coal and gas-fired power stations that make the electricity to drive the car. That is why the way we produce electricity is changing to wind, solar and other renewables so that driving an electric car will produce no harmful gases anywhere on the planet.
